Ben Askren, a notable figure in mixed martial arts and a former champion in organizations like UFC, Bellator, and ONE Championship, remains in a medically induced coma as he continues treatment for a serious health condition. His wife, Amy Askren, provided an update indicating both some positive and troubling signs regarding his health.
The 40-year-old Askren was hospitalized in Las Vegas over a week ago due to pneumonia, leading to his placement in a medically induced coma. Recently, he has been transferred to a hospital closer to his home in Wisconsin, aiming for better care and recovery.
Amy Askren reported on social media that while Ben is still on a ventilator and requires extra support from ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation), there have been moments of responsiveness. During these times, medical staff have been able to partially lift his sedation, allowing him to open his eyes and even squeeze hands. However, his condition remains serious, as there are discussions regarding the need for a lung transplant.
“I haven’t shared an update because Ben has been in limbo for a while and I was hoping to have him wake up and be the one to decide what to share,” Amy Askren stated in her post. “But the reality is tough. He is still on a ventilator and ECMO to support him while he heals. There are good days and bad days, but on the good days, he has been able to open his eyes and show some responsiveness. That said, his body cannot handle coming off sedation too much just yet.”
Amy also noted the gravity of the situation, mentioning, “I’m praying for a miracle with his current lungs, but they are currently starting the evaluation process for a lung transplant.” This underscores the seriousness of Ben Askren’s condition, as healthcare professionals assess his situation.
She expressed gratitude for the support they have received, saying, “Please pray for his continued healing, and if a transplant is necessary, that he can get on the list quickly and easily. I know transplants are such a blessing, and I’m overwhelmed at the thought of him receiving such a gift. No one would take better care of that gift than Ben.”
Understanding the depth of this tough situation, Amy asked followers to cherish their loved ones, reflecting on the unpredictable nature of health: “Ben is the healthiest guy I know, and I never could have expected this.”
Ben Askren concluded his distinguished MMA career in 2019 but made a brief return to combat sports in 2021 for a high-profile boxing match against Jake Paul. As friends, family, and fans rally around the Askren family during this challenging time, updates will continue to emerge as Ben's condition evolves.
The developments surrounding Ben Askren's health highlight the importance of awareness and support in times of medical crisis. As the community waits for further news, the thoughts and wishes of many remain with him and his family.
