Former UFC and Bellator fighter Ben Askren is currently hospitalized in Wisconsin, where he is fighting for his life. His wife, Amy Askren, provided an update on his health on social media, stating that Ben is being prepared for a lung transplant.
On June 7, Amy revealed that Ben had been hospitalized in Nevada due to "severe pneumonia." He has since been transferred to a medical facility in Wisconsin to be closer to his family during this critical time. In her latest update, Amy shared that Ben remains 'in limbo' as medical professionals begin the evaluation process for a potential lung transplant.
In her heartfelt message, Amy explained her delay in providing updates, noting, "I haven’t shared an update because Ben has been in limbo for a while and I was hoping to have him wake up and be the one to decide what to share. I’ve had some media people contact me that they are going to share an update, and I would rather it come from me." This update underscores the seriousness of Ben Askren's condition and the family's desire to control the narrative.
Amy described Ben’s current state, stating that he remains on a ventilator and ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) to assist with his lung functions. She noted, "There are good days and bad, but on the good days, they have been able to wean his sedation enough for him to open his eyes and squeeze hands." However, she added that Ben's body is struggling to handle being off sedation for extended periods. Her message reflects a mixture of hope and concern, as she continues to pray for a miracle with Ben’s existing lungs while recognizing the need for a transplant.
Amy further appealed for prayers, saying, "Please pray for his continued healing, and if transplant is the solution, that he can get on the list quickly and easily. I know transplants are such a blessing, and I’m overwhelmed at the thought of him receiving a gift like that. No one would take better care of that gift than Ben."
She closed her update by expressing gratitude for the community support they have received during this difficult time. "Thank you for every message and all of the support. Despite this awful situation, I’m feeling so blessed by the community we’re surrounded by." Amy also encouraged others to appreciate their loved ones, stating, "Give your loved ones a hug today and make sure you’re prepared for situations like this. Ben is the healthiest guy I know, and I never could have expected this." This sentiment highlights the unexpected nature of Ben's health crisis.
Ben Askren retired from mixed martial arts in 2019, but he made a return to combat sports in April 2021 when he faced YouTube star Jake Paul in a boxing match. In addition to his fighting career, Ben hosts a popular podcast on YouTube with former two-division UFC champion Daniel Cormier, which has garnered a significant following in the combat sports community.
The ongoing situation surrounding Ben Askren is a reminder of the challenges athletes face beyond the ring and the importance of community support during tough times. As he continues his battle for health, the hope remains for his recovery and a potential lung transplant to restore his well-being.
